It was established in 1980 as Ogun State Polytechnic and was renamed Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in 2017, in honor of Moshood Abiola, a prominent Nigerian politician, and businessman.

To gain admission into MAPOLY, candidates are required to have at least five credit passes in their SSCE or NECO in relevant subjects, including Mathematics and English Language, in not more than two sittings.

Students must also pass the UTME examination and obtain the required cut-off mark for their chosen course of study.
